The Tax Side of Your Side Hustle: What Every Gig Worker Needs to Know

A side hustle can be a powerful income boost, but it comes with a tax structure that surprises first-time gig workers. Understanding the rules before you earn prevents the April shock that derails many new entrepreneurs.

Every dollar of net self-employment income is subject to self-employment tax — the combined employer and employee share of Social Security and Medicare — in addition to income tax. This is the single biggest difference from W-2 work, where the employer covers half.

The good news is the deduction side. Business expenses — mileage, supplies, software, a home office — reduce your net income and therefore both your income tax and self-employment tax. Diligent expense tracking is the gig worker's best defense against a high tax bill.

You may need to make quarterly estimated payments. If you expect to owe more than $1,000 at filing, the IRS expects payments throughout the year, and underpayment penalties apply if you do not. Setting aside 25–30% of every payment you receive prevents the shortfall.

Keep business and personal finances separate, even for a small side hustle. A dedicated account and a simple mileage log transform tax time from a reconstruction project into a reporting exercise.

Track every 1099 you receive — and report all income even if you did not receive a 1099. The IRS receives copies of 1099-NEC and 1099-K forms, and unreported income is the most common reason gig workers receive notices.

A side hustle is a small business, and treating it like one — with separate accounts, expense logs, and quarterly tax set-asides — is what separates the gig workers who build wealth from the ones who build tax debt.
