7 Common IRS Audit Triggers and How to Avoid Them

The overall audit rate is low, but the IRS uses data to target returns that deviate from expected patterns. Understanding what draws attention helps you file accurately without fear.

First, unreported income. The IRS receives copies of every W-2, 1099, and K-1. Failing to report income that was reported to the IRS is the fastest way to generate a notice — and often an automated adjustment.

Second, disproportionately large deductions. Claiming a charitable deduction or home office expense that is large relative to your income is a statistical outlier the IRS systems flag. That does not mean you should not claim what you are entitled to — it means you should have documentation.

Third, the home office deduction. It is legitimate but narrowly defined: the space must be used regularly and exclusively for business. A dining table that doubles as a desk does not qualify.

Fourth, high cash income. Cash-heavy businesses (restaurants, salons, contractors) are scrutinized because underreporting is more feasible. Keep detailed daily records.

Fifth, claiming a hobby as a business. Losses from an activity that never turns a profit can be reclassified as a hobby, disallowing the losses. The profit motive — demonstrated by business plans, marketing, and changing methods — is what separates the two.

Sixth, round numbers. Reporting exactly $5,000 in expenses looks estimated, not actual. Real numbers are messy.

Seventh, amending a return to claim a large refund shortly after filing. The IRS reviews these carefully. Amend only when you have a documented reason.

Accuracy and documentation are the audit defense. File honestly, keep records, and the audit risk — even if it comes — becomes a manageable conversation rather than a crisis.
